Environment
With acres of tended gardens, kilometres of natural foreshore, ancient sand dunes, parks and playgrounds for all ages, Botanic Gardens showcasing the region's flora and internationally recognised and protected natural areas, the Fraser Coast is a unique eco-environment. Council is committed to protecting our natural assets through strategic planning, maintenance programs and the assistance of dedicated volunteers.
Great Sandy Biosphere
The Great Sandy region was declared as a Biosphere reserve on 26 May 2009.
At its meeting in Korea, UNESCO's International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere program reesolved to accept the nomination.
The decision means that residents of Gympie, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and nearby areas including Fraser Island now live in the "Great Sandy Biosphere" reserve.
