Environmental health

Clean water and air, safe food and housing, protection from pollutants and the prevention and control of disease underpin the quality of life and the health of Australians.

The main focus of environmental health is to prevent disease and create health-supportive environments.

Council's Environmental Health Officers have been given authority under a variety of state and local legislation to promote public health and reduce the environmental impacts on public safety and amenity within the local community.

Environmental Health Officers process applications, conduct routine assessments, investigate complaints and generally regulate the following activities to ensure compliance with any relevant legislation and/or standards:

  • Food safety
  • Environmentally relevant activities (industrial)
  • Swimming pools (public / commercial)
  • Budget accommodation  (shared accommodation)
  • Water carters (drinking water only)
  • Higher risk personal appearance premises (e.g. tattooist)
  • Temporary entertainment events
  • Environmental and public health nuisances – (air, water, noise, asbestos, vermin)

Environmental Health Officers also undertake:

  • Recreational water quality assessment and monitoring
  • Health promotion and education activities
