Work has started on a revamp of the intersection of the Esplanade and Tavistock Street in Hervey Bay.

Under the project a raised intersection with a pedestrian crossing will be installed.

The pedestrian crossing will link Nielsen Park with shops on the southern side of the Esplanade and paved pedestrian refuges will be added to either side of Tavistock Street.

“The works will improve safety at the intersection,” Fraser Coast Mayor Mick Kruger said.

“The changes will alert drivers that they are entering a busy area and be more aware of pedestrians.”

The project is expected to take 6 to 8 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

“The project was undertaken as the result of feedback from businesses in the area,” Cr Kruger said.

“We aim to get as much of the work as possible done by Easter. The project will then close down to ensure the Esplanade is not blocked during what is a busy time of the year. It will be finished after Easter.”

The Esplanade and Tavistock Street will remain open to traffic during the project. Motorists are urged to allow extra time to move through the worksite or use alternate routes. Motorists are reminded to obey traffic control signs and personnel.

The project follows on from work to expand a car park in Freshwater Street by 11 spaces.
