Leshan, China Leshan, China

Current status

The Hervey Bay - Leshan Sister City relationship has remained active and strong since its inception in 1997.

This is largely due to the excellent Foreign Affairs staff in Leshan and many of the formal as well as informal relationships established at many levels of government and across a range of spheres from education, tourism, busines, independent travel and the cultural exchange program.

Chinese garden

Work will continue on the Chinese Gardens in Hervey Bay’s Botanic Gardens following the arrival of many crates of bricks, roof tiles and stone ornaments from China.

Work on the Chinese garden will be completed by Council staff with assistance from Fraser Coast contractors.

It will include a moon gate and cloud wall, main entry, feature fountain, circular court, pond, an arbour, timber bridge, pavilion and curved bench.

Initial groundwork is under way and it is anticipated that the project could be finished by March 2012 depending on weather conditions.

Current News

From the 24th to the 31st July, 13 students and 3 teachers from our sister school Leshan No.1 School visited Urangan State High School. During their visit to Hervey Bay, the students attended classes at Urangan State High School with their host brothers/sisters. Students and teachers were warmly welcomed into the host families who were the parents of Urangan High School LOTE Chinese students.

As most of the group have not seen the ocean before, it was a big thrill for them to visit Fraser Island and went whale watching. The trip to Maryborough and meeting the Mayor and councillors were also a highlight of their trip. The natural beauty, the relaxing lifestyle and all the friendship established definitely will be a life-long memory for both Chinese visiting students as well as Urangan students.
