Mosquitoes Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are capable of carrying and transmitting a number of infectious diseases such as the Ross River virus.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council's Vector and Pest Management Officers carry out regular inspections of public watercourses, reserves and commercial areas and undertake treament to prevent mosquito breeding.  Inspections assist our officers to locate breeding sites and enable Council to show the community how to reduce mosquito issues.

Controlling Mosquitoes Around Your Yard

Statutory law requires that residents assist in the eradication of mosquitoes.  The following simple steps will assist in helping to stop mosquitoes from breeding on your property:

  • Get rid of any accumulated water
  • Put sand around the base of pot plants to absorb water in the dish
  • Dispose of tins, jars, tyres and other items that hold water
  • Empty all flower vases, bird baths, pet drinking water, etc on a regular basis
  • Wipe inside containers to remove mosquito eggs (destroy cloth afterwards)
  • Screen all openings to tanks, wells or other large water containers (with 1mm wire gauze)
  • Remove leaves and debris from roof guttering regularly so water cannot accumulate
  • Keep swimming pools chlorinated (empty and wipe children's wading pools)
  • Stock fish ponds with fish
