Art shows celebrate the everyday and environment

3 December 2019

Two new art exhibitions celebrating the everyday and the environment will be officially opened at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery on Friday night (6 December).

Bundaberg artist Jassy Watson’s exhibition features unique paintings of everyday scenes from the landscape to the lounge created primarily with a mix of acrylic and oils.

Motivated by a desire to slow down in life and to enjoy more moments of stillness and presence, Jassy was inspired to commit to a daily drawing practice capturing moments of places and things from her backyard in Bundaberg to Bali where she spends part of the year.

Jassy transferred some of these drawings into large paintings that form the basis of her exhibition ‘The Sacred & Mundane: Scenes of the Everyday’.

“My intention in creating this body of work is to remind one of the magic in the mundane moments and to see that the beauty and sacredness of life is all around us,” Jassy said.

“I have stopped to smell (and draw) the roses and realise that the sacred nature of life is right there in front of me.”

Also opening at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery this week is “Go With the Flow” – an exhibition by Beatrice Prost and Janey Richards featuring surreal semi-abstracted paintings.

Both artists explore our interaction with the many organic worlds surrounding us. Both are passionate about the environment, the challenges it faces, its beauty, its diversity, its forms and colours.

Janey’s series of works ‘Leave It’ express a quirky message of how leaves matter whether it be in a recycling sense of mulching, a beautiful walk in nature or the splendour of changing colours.

With her projection and stills, Beatrice immerses the viewer into the unseen, untold, unheard life of diverse underwater ecosystems from fresh waterlilies to coral microcosms.

The free ‘Art After Dark’ exhibition openings will be held at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery on Friday night from 6pm.

‘The Sacred & Mundane’ continues until 26 January, while ‘Go With The Flow’ concludes on 2 February.
