City Hall to bask in new streetscape

8 July 2019

The section of Kent Street in front of the Maryborough City Hall will be the focus of the Maryborough CBD Revitalisation Project which will start later this month (July).

Cr Daniel Sanderson said the $2.5 million makeover would involve road and footpath upgrades on both sides of Kent Street between Adelaide and Lennox streets and a small area west of the Kent and Lennox streets intersection.

“The revitalisation project is all about ensuring the CBD draws in shoppers and visitors, and is an attractive place for businesses to invest,” he said.

“CBDs have evolved and are now more than just places to shop; they must be appealing so they attract visitors and are a hub for community activities.

“When you add in the opening of The Story Bank and the Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial in Queens Park, the Maryborough CBD certainly has a lot going for it.”

The new revitalisation project will be split into two stages with Stage 1 covering the area around the Lennox Street intersection which includes replacing the traffic lights, kerb and channel and footpaths, pavement, installation of artwork and landscaping.

Stage 2 includes the area between Adelaide and Lennox streets in front of the City Hall and covers the replacement of kerb and channel, footpaths, new pavement and replacing the retaining wall in front of the City Hall.

The first stage is scheduled to start late July and finish by mid-October, weather permitting, while  Stage 2 is anticipated to start in mid-November and be finished in May 2020.”

The majority of work will be completed at night. The roads will be closed and traffic detoured around the site at night.

During Stage 1 works, the roads will be fully closed at night and partial lane closures will be in place in the early hours of the morning, with only minor traffic disruptions expected.

During Stage 2, day time traffic will be restricted to one-way through the project site and on-street car parks closed only in front of work areas.

“We thank residents and businesses for their patience while this important work in the Maryborough CBD is carried out,” Cr Sanderson said.

The Maryborough CBD Revitalisation Project was modelled on feedback from CBD businesses, property owners and residents during consultation held in 2013 for the Imagine This City Project.

Since then revitalisation works have been undertaken in Adelaide Street from Ellena to Sussex streets; Kent Street from Adelaide Street towards March Street; Lennox Street from Sussex to Ellena streets; Ellena Street from Adelaide to Bazaar streets; and Bazaar Street from Ellena to Sussex streets.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council is contributing almost $1.6 million towards the latest project, with the Queensland Government contributing $921,960 through the Building Our Regions program.
