Fraser Coast hosts its own Shark Tank-type event

5 February 2020

If you have an innovative idea to make the Fraser Coast a better place - then pitch it.

“We’re looking for ideas, and we’re looking for community and business feedback on those ideas,” Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre Vice-President Kirsti Kee, said.

To unearth those good ideas a Pitch Night, similar to the show Shark Tank, will be held at the Brolga Theatre on Thursday, February 27.

“The best pitch, selected by a panel, will receive $3,000 towards its implementation. The best pitch selected by the community will receive $2,000 from Stockland towards its implementation,” Social Plan Community Engagement Officer Lesa Stagg said.

“The Pitch Night is a free event: it’s free to enter to make a pitch and free to come along on the night to listen to the pitches.

“The pitches will also be livestreamed so the community can hear and then vote.”

Everyone making a pitch will have five minutes to present their idea. A framework form, to layout your pitch presentation, is located on the Fraser Coast Social Plan website

“We want lots of ideas presented on the night,” Ms Stagg said.

“While two pitches will receive funding to be implemented, we hope that Fraser Coast businesses, community groups and service clubs will also attend and back some of the ideas that will be put forward.

“A couple of ideas that have been implemented already include the Kindness Garden for the homeless at the Hervey Bay Community Centre; the Read Bears Literacy Project and the Wandering Teapot shop at Stockland to generate funds for projects to help homeless youths.”

The Fraser Coast Social Plan was funded by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, Council and the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

“It will help us tackle social problems to ensure we can provide a safe, active and healthy community,” Ms Kee said.

“The plan has been developed with community input to ensure it identified our issues and put forward localised solutions to help address the community issues impacting us.

“It encourages collaboration for groups to connect and develop new ideas specific to the Fraser Coast.”

The Pitch Night is organised by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre as part of the implementation of the Fraser Coast Social Plan.
