New elevated tower reservoir for Tiaro
7 August, 2018
The elevated water tank that has stood watch over Tiaro for many years is about to be replaced.
Local company, Vickers Aluminium, has been engaged to fabricate a new 150,000-litre stainless steel tank, remove the old tank and install the new as part of the $296,000 project.
“The roof of the existing tank on the Tiaro elevated tower reservoir in Forgan Terrace is corroded, which has made it structurally unsound and leaky,” Small Communities Development Portfolio Councillor Anne Maddern said.
“A leaky roof presents a health hazard as it can let contaminants into the water.
“To ensure that the water remained contamination free a heavy-duty tarpaulin has been used to cover the roof.”
In the process of replacing the roof Council identified that it would be more cost effective to replace the entire tank.
“The price to replace the roof, coupled with on-going maintenance of the old tank, was such that replacing the whole tank became a better option,” Cr Maddern said.
While it will take only a day for the old tank to be removed and the new tank installed, the entire process of connecting the pipes and filling the tank may take up to a week.
“The project team have been made arrangements to ensure the Tiaro water supply will not be interrupted during the change over,” Cr Maddern said.
