Walk and talk at Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens
9 March, 2018
If you’ve ever wanted to delve into the history of the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens on Elizabeth Street, Urangan, or learn about the flora and fauna that grow and live there, you’re in luck.
Fraser Coast Culture, Arts and Environment Councillor David Lewis said garden enthusiasts have great opportunities this month to join a guided walk with a horticulturist or listen to an experienced orchid grower share his knowledge.
Starting at the Orchid House on Wednesday 14 March from 10am to 11am, a qualified horticulturist will take people on a guided walk through the Botanic Gardens.
“This walk will take you on a journey through the gardens to hear traditional stories and learn about the magnificent specimens and creatures in this beautiful park,” Cr Lewis said.
“After the tour you can enjoy a complimentary cuppa at the Orchid House overlooking the lagoon.”
On Wednesday 21 March from 10am to 11am at the Orchid House, guest speaker David Gatfield will talk about how to successfully grow orchids in a sub-tropical climate.
Cr Lewis said Mr Gatfield’s talk would give attendees a chance to enhance their orchid growing experience.
“David is a passionate orchid collector and respected member of the Australian orchid community. He has the prestigious status of orchid judge and adjudicates local and national orchid shows and conferences.
“His talk will provide information relevant to our sub-tropical climate and help home orchid growers select suitable orchids, choose the correct light and temperature conditions and know when to water, fertilise and repot.
“Attendees may also bring in an orchid that they’re having trouble growing or have questions about.”
Entry fees are $5 for the tour on 14 March and $3 for the talk on 21 March.
