Established in March 2014, the Food Forest Garden was designed as an attractive public area which grows mainly edible perennial plants.
Located along the River Heads Community Hall, the garden has flourished with Asian vegetables, tropical greens, bush tucker plants, climbers, herbs and spices as well as some unusual ornamentals. A salad bar has also been recently added.
The edible garden is open all hours and introduces locals and visitors to new plants, tastes, textures, shapes, scents and different ways to use a variety of plants.
A small free seed bank has been established in the book swap library in the Community Hall. Contributions of edible plants and seeds are welcome.
The garden is managed in conjunction with the River Heads Community Garden.
Supported is received from the Hervey Bay Garden Club, Fraser Coast Sub-Tropical Fruit Club, River Heads Progress Association and other community volunteers as well as the Hervey Bay and Surrounds Gardening Facebook group.
