Recycling bin survey to help Council improve services

Fraser Coast Regional Council will survey kerbside bins this week to help determine how much residents are recycling and to ensure services are meeting community needs.

A Council contractor would be collecting and bagging recycling contents from randomly selected households across the region as part of the survey.

“The kerbside collections will take place on normal bin collection days next week with the contents sorted at the processing centre to determine the recycling rate,” Cr Zane O’Keefe said.

“Recyclable material will be added to the recycling stream and other waste, including items in plastic bags, will be sent to landfill. 

“The data will be used to build a picture of what is happening across the region and to assist Council to improve bin services and target areas where we need to provide more education about recycling.”

Cr O’Keefe said the data would be aggregated by the truckload with no individual household data collected as part of the survey.

“Recycling is good for the environment, the economy and the local community and that’s why Council is committed to improving recycling rates throughout the region,” he said.

“The Fraser Coast Regional Council encourages residents to sort their loads before heading to the tip to help reduce waste to landfill.

“A range of items such as green waste (up to four cubic metres or one tonne), oil up to 20 litres, electrical equipment, identified chemicals up to 20 litres and paint can be disposed of at no charge at Council tips and transfer stations.”
