Fraser Coast school garden competition winners announced

17 October 2019

Kawungan State School and Urangan High School are the joint Grand Champions of the Wide Bay Water and Waste Services 2019 school garden competition.

Cr Anne Maddern said the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s School Water and Waste Wise Garden Competition aimed to increase water and recycling awareness through gardening.

“I congratulate all the schools for doing their bit to reduce, reuse and recycle,” she said.

Urangan High School students feed their food scraps to worm farms and chooks to create mulch for their gardens and eggs to eat.

“The students used lot of creativity and originality to repurpose materials such as roof gutter to make vertical gardens, and built a three-hole miniature golf course to play on,” Cr Maddern said.

Students of the Kawungan State School Garden Club put in a lot of research before embarking on their project.

“The students organised for a waste audit to identify how much reusable or recyclable materials were ending up in the rubbish,” Cr Maddern said.

“Their aim was to create a garden that uses as little water as possible to keep it flourishing so they planted water-wise plants (succulents); used water saving devices such as wicking beds (garden beds with in build water reservoirs and ollas) and water-wise gardening principles (composting, mulching, moisture testers and mist irrigation).”

More information on water-wise design and gardening tips is available here.
