Dayman Park upgrades underway

Construction has commenced on a new shelter and picnic area at Dayman Park in Urangan, aiming to boost sun protection for locals and elevating it as an inviting leisure spot.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said the upgrades are forecast to cost $60,000 and are expected to enhance the park’s amenities.

“The old shelter was closed to the community in December 2023 after an inspection identified it as in a state of disrepair,” said Cr Zane O’Keefe.

“Rather than erecting a completely new shelter, we’ve been able to get a replacement from the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre, which is currently undergoing renovations around the 25m pool area.

“We are now relocating that shelter to Dayman Park making this the most economical choice saving ratepayers money and also the most environmentally conscious option.”

Cr O’Keefe said the existing picnic settings and barbeque will also be replaced as part of the project.

“Dayman Park is a great place to bring people together so it will be great to restore the park to its full potential,” he said.

“Dayman Park has undergone several upgrades in recent years to make it sun safe and interactive.

“In 2020 Council added some musical instruments to the lower Dayman Park Playground and increased shade as part of a $100,000 makeover.

“In 2022, part of a culturally significant scar tree was incorporated into a sculpture at Dayman Park adding to its cultural significance to the Butchulla people.”

Council carpenters and landscapers will deliver the majority of the upgrades. Local companies will also be used for the electrical and concrete work.

Works are scheduled for completion by mid to late June.
