Rail Trail Lighting Upgrades

What happened

Fraser Coast Regional Council upgraded the lighting along a 2.3-kilometre section of the Mary to Bay Rail Trail between Torquay Road and Urraween Road. This included replacing deteriorated lights with new architectural poles and energy-efficient LED lighting to improve safety and visibility.

Why

The old lighting system was aged and beyond repair. Upgrading to modern, energy-efficient LED technology ensures the trail remains safe and accessible for walkers, runners and cyclists - especially in the early mornings and evenings.

When

Work commenced early September 2025 and was completed by end of January 2026.

What

Completed works included:

  • Torquay Road to Old Maryborough Road - supply and installation of new architectural light poles and LED luminaires;
  • Old Maryborough Road to Boat Harbour Drive - supply and installation of new architectural light poles and LED luminaires; and
  • Boat Harbour Drive to Urraween Road - Replacement of existing luminaires with new energy-efficient
    LED lighting.

How much will it cost

The project cost $920,000, funded through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program. This includes the cost of principal-supplied materials.

Community impact

The trail remained open during construction, with traffic and pedestrian management plans in place to ensure public safety and minimise disruption for users of the Rail Trail. The upgrade improves safety, visibility, and comfort for the many residents and visitors who walk, run, or cycle along this popular shared path.
