K'gari Waste

World heritage K'gari is located within the Fraser Coast Council waste collection area.

K’gari ratepayers can dispose of their waste at Council’s three waste facilities located at:

New Recycling Program for K'gari

From Monday 1 September, residents in Eurong and Happy Valley will be able to drop off comingled recycling at their local waste facilities, providing more ways to reduce waste and protect the island environment.

Key changes include:

  • Recycling available at the Eurong and Happy Valley waste facilities.
  • Eurong’s bin compound open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Bulk household waste (like furniture or white goods) and hazardous waste (like oil, chemicals and batteries) can now be dropped off in the core facility area at Eurong during opening hours: Monday, Thursday and Saturday, 9.30am to 2.30pm.
  • Recycling at Orchid Beach will be rolled out later, once Council has assessed how well the service is working at the other two locations.

Waste management and resource recovery

Eurong Waste Facility

From the 1 July 2025, Eurong Waste Facility will be divided into a Bin Compound Area and Core Facility Area.

The Bin Compound Area will be open 24/7 and allow access to general waste bins.

The Core Facility Area will be open with supervision for 15 hours a week to allow residents to drop off a range of waste types, including household quantities of oil, chemicals, mattresses, e-waste and batteries. For a full list of what is accepted, please refer to the infromation sheet below.

The opening times for the Core Facility Area are:

  • Monday: 9:30am to 2:30pm
  • Thursday: 9:30am to 2:30pm
  • Saturday: 9:30am to 2:30pm

Happy Valley and Orchid Beach

The Happy Valley Waste Facility and the Orchid Beach Waste Facility accept bulky household waste and steel items during scheduled quarterly fortnightly periods.

Happy Valley: Collections occur during the first two weeks of February, May, August, and November.

Orchid Beach: Collections occur during the first two weeks of January, April, July and October.

These periods have been set in consultation with the Happy Valley and Orchid Beach communities and key stakeholders.

Outside of the schedule collection times Happy Valley and Orchid Beach residents are encouraged to take their bulk waste, steel and other accepted waste types to the Eurong Waste Facility during opening hours (Monday, Thursday and Saturday 9.30am-2.30pm) or a mainland facility.

All other waste services remain the same, with free disposal of general household / domestic waste at all times.

These changes are part of the implementation of the K’gari Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy adopted in July 2022.

Waste facility conditions of entry

Before entering the waste sites at K’gari, please make sure that the following conditions are met:

  • Footwear must be worn at all times
  • Gates to remain closed at all times
  • Children are to remain in vehicle at all times
  • All waste should be placed in bins or allocated areas as signed
  • If bin is full, move to next bin
  • Keep lids on bins closed
  • No unauthorised lighting of fires
  • No scavenging

Disposal of regulated waste

Regulated waste such as asbestos, contaminated soil and construction waste must not be disposed of on K’gari. These waste materials must be brought to the Maryborough Waste Facility or disposed of through a licensed regulated waste transporter.

K’gari (Fraser Island) Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy

Fraser Coast Regional Council recently received funding under the Australian Heritage Grants Program to develop and implement the K’gari (Fraser Island) Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy.

This strategy includes targeted actions to maintain, protect and conserve the unique World Heritage and cultural values of K’gari (Fraser Island) through sustainable waste practices.
The project aims to apply waste management and resource recovery principles that align with the Butchulla first lore “what is good for the land comes first.”

The K'Gari (Fraser Island) Waste Management and Resource Recover Strategy 2023-2029 was adopted at a Council meeting on 27 July 2022.
