Smoke Alarms

New smoke alarm laws (commencing 1 January 2027)

From 1 January 2027, new smoke alarm requirements will apply to all existing homes in Queensland. These laws are designed to improve early warning of fires and help protect residents.

To be compliant, smoke alarms must:

  • Be photoelectric smoke alarms
  • Be interconnected, so when one alarm activates all alarms in the dwelling sound together
    comply with Australian Standard AS 3786:2014 (this marking is usually located on the body of the alarm - you may need to remove the mounting bracket to view it)
  • Not contain an ionisation sensor
  • Be either:
    • Hardwired to the mains power supply and installed by a licensed electrician, with a secondary backup power source; or
    • Photoelectric alarms with a sealed 10-year non-removable battery, which can be installed by the property owner.

These requirements apply to smoke alarms installed in dwellings throughout Queensland.
