Fraser Coast library members are invited to dive into a whale-sized competition by helping name two friendly whale sculptures at the new Hervey Bay Library or taking part in a whale-themed colouring competition.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the adult and calf whales have quickly become a standout feature on the new library, making it the perfect time to give them names of their own.
“The moment you walk upstairs, you’re welcomed by these beautiful whale statues swimming among a sea of jellyfish while suspended from the ceiling,” he said.
“Hervey Bay is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales, so it seems only fitting that our newest library residents have names inspired by the Fraser Coast.”
Cr Seymour said library members can suggest a name for one whale or both, with winning names selected through a People’s Choice vote from 8 – 22 October.
“For those who prefer colouring rather than naming, the library is also inviting creative minds to take part in a whale-themed colouring competition for all ages.”
Categories include:
- Under 5
- 6 to 11 years
- 12 to 17 years
- 18+
- All Abilities
Cr Seymour said the competitions are all about encouraging imagination and community participation.
“A $50 Fraser Coast Buy Local Gift Card will be awarded to the winner in each category as well as the winners for the ‘Name the Whale’ competition,” he said.
“Entries close Saturday 3 October with winners announced at a special presentation on 29 October.”
Entry forms can be collected from the new Hervey Bay library or downloaded at: https://www.ourfrasercoast.com.au/Libraries/Whats-On/CYPF/Name-the-Whales-Colouring-in-competition
Completed entries can be submitted at any Fraser Coast Libraries branch including Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro, Howard and Burrum Heads.
