Council backs funding bid for Eskdale Park upgrade

Fraser Coast Regional Council has backed a Queensland Rugby League (QRL) application seeking $3 million in federal funding to upgrade Eskdale Park in Maryborough.
If successful, the application to the Australian Government’s Major and Local Community Infrastructure Program would fund upgrades to the regional sporting facility, including a new clubhouse, change rooms and amenities.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said Council’s support would help progress an important project for the region’s sporting community.
“Eskdale Park is a key venue for rugby league and community sport in Maryborough, and the upgrades would deliver safer, more accessible facilities for players, volunteers and spectators,” he said.
“By sponsoring the application, Council is helping position the project to secure significant external funding that would benefit local clubs, support participation across all ages and abilities, and strengthen a valued community asset.
“This project would also enhance the region’s ability to host major competitions and community events, bringing visitors to Maryborough and supporting local businesses.”
Cr Seymour said Council would remain responsible for governance, financial management and legislative compliance as project sponsor if the funding application is successful, working closely with QRL to deliver the project.
Sport and Recreation spokesperson Cr Daniel Sanderson said the redevelopment would support the long-term future of grassroots sport on the Fraser Coast.
“Local sporting clubs rely on quality facilities to grow, attract new players and retain volunteers,” he said.
“Eskdale Park is an iconic sporting facility in Maryborough, and this upgrade will go a very long way in bringing renewed pride and excitement back into a well-loved ground.
“These upgrades would create a more inclusive, multi-purpose venue capable of supporting junior sport, women and girls’ programs, school activities and wider community use.
“Investing in facilities like Eskdale Park helps keep our community active, connected and healthy, while also positioning the Fraser Coast to benefit from future regional sporting opportunities.”
Council’s endorsement allows the funding application to be submitted before the program deadline of 1 March 2026.
If approved, Council will enter into formal agreements with Queensland Rugby League to manage project delivery in line with funding conditions and governance requirements.
