Council marks Volunteer Week with a call-out

Fraser Coast residents are being encouraged to give back to the community during National Volunteer Week, with Council calling for more locals to join its volunteer teams across libraries, galleries, theatres, animal care, environmental programs and senior services.

Communities spokesperson Cr Phil Truscott said volunteers were the heart of many community programs and services across the Fraser Coast.

“Volunteers make an enormous difference in our community every single day,” he said.

“They help people feel connected, support important community spaces and programs, and bring passion and energy to the roles they take on.

“Volunteering is also a great way to stay active, meet new people, learn new skills and be part of something meaningful.

“National Volunteer Week starts today and celebrates the millions of Australians who generously give their time to strengthen communities across the country.”

Cr Truscott said more than 300 volunteers currently support Council programs and services across the region, with opportunities available for residents all year round to get involved in areas they are passionate about.

“Whether you love books, animals, the arts, gardening, history or the environment, there’s a volunteer role to suit a wide range of interests,” he said.

“One of Council’s largest volunteer networks supports the environment through our Bushcare program, with 112 volunteers helping with tree planting, seed collection, fauna monitoring and community events while learning valuable new skills along the way.

“We also have around 150 volunteers supporting the Brolga Theatre and Fraser Coast Libraries.

“At the Brolga Theatre, 90 volunteers assist as foyer attendants, doorkeepers and ushers, while about 60 support Fraser Coast Libraries with events, activities, craft preparation, information packs and the popular seed library.

“At the Fraser Coast Adoption Centre, 31 volunteers help care for animals by walking dogs and socialising kittens, while close to 30 volunteers support the Orchid House at the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens with customer service, the nursery and community events.

“There are so many rewarding volunteer opportunities across Council, and we encourage anyone interested to get involved and apply today.”

  • Halcro Street Community Gardens and Community Centre
  • Fraser Coast Adoption Centre
  • Friends of the Library
  • The Story Bank and Bond Store in Maryborough
  • Gatakers Artspace and Hervey Bay Regional Gallery
  • Community Environment Program

Cr Truscott said it was now easier than ever to apply, with Council launching a new online volunteer webpage where residents could register their interest year-round.

“No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved,” he said.
