Fraser Coast residents are invited to have their say on a proposal to name the parkland surrounding Scarness Park’s iconic Rotunda as “Haddow’s Corner,” in recognition of the Haddow family’s significant contribution to Scarness and Hervey Bay.

Mayor George Seymour said the naming aims to honour the Haddow family’s deep ties to Scarness, dating back to their arrival in 1925.

“The Haddow family played a key role in shaping Scarness, from establishing the first café and milk bar to operating Haddow’s Hall, which became a local entertainment hub,” Cr Seymour said.

“Over the years, the Haddows expanded their business ventures to include a newsagency, a barber shop, billiard rooms, and even the first petrol bowser in the area.

“The Haddows’ contributions to Scarness are woven into the fabric of our local history, and their legacy remains strong today.”

The proposed name, “Haddow’s Corner”, celebrates the family’s lasting impact on the region, particularly with the centenary of the Scarness Band Rotunda approaching in May 2026.

The Rotunda, which originally sat in front of Haddow’s Hall, is a rare surviving example of the pre-war seaside tourism era and was added to the Local Heritage Register last year.

It continues to serve as a gathering point for local events and community celebrations, with Council repairing and repainting the structure last year to reflect its original character.

Residents can share their views through an online poll on Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ website - https://haveyoursay.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/

The poll will be open from Monday 30 March to Monday 6 April 2026.
