Ngabang and Walbai have been officially announced as the winning names of the two resident whale sculptures located at the new Hervey Bay Library during a special awards presentation yesterday.
Fraser Coast library members were invited to dive into a whale-sized competition by helping to name the library’s two friendly whale sculptures or taking part in a whale-themed colouring competition.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Libraries spokesperson Cr Michelle Govers said the community response had been overwhelming, with over 400 entries received across both competitions.
“We received 230 entries into the Name the Whale competition from children aged six to 11, with both winning names suggested by Emily from Maryborough and selected through a People’s Choice vote,” she said.
"We're thrilled with the names Ngabang and Walbai, which celebrate the region's rich Butchulla cultural heritage and connection to the natural environment.
“Ngabang is the Butchulla word for mother, while Walbai is the Butchulla word for baby.
“Hervey Bay is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales, so it seems only fitting that our newest library residents have names inspired by the Fraser Coast.”
Cr Govers said the library also received 228 entries for the Whale Colouring-in Competition, which proved a popular school holiday activity for library members of all ages.
“The colouring competition was a fantastic way to encourage creativity, imagination and community participation, with entries across all age categories showcasing the enthusiasm and artistic talent within our community,” she said.
Colouring In Competition Winners:
- Under 5 – Clara
- 6 to 11 years - Beau and Ahria
- 12 to 17 years - Penny
- 18+ - Amanda

The winner of the Name the Whale competition and the winners in each category of the colouring in competition were awarded $50 Fraser Coast Buy Local Gift Cards.
