New technology brings creative learning to Hervey Bay Library

Fraser Coast library members can book Equipment Skills Check sessions from today to learn how to use the creative technology that will be available in the Makerspace area at the new Hervey Bay Library when it opens.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the sessions would run for two weeks starting Monday August 31, giving library members the skills they needed to independently use a range of equipment.
“The new library will continue to provide the services our community knows and loves, while introducing exciting new opportunities to learn, create and explore technology," he said.
“It's a place where people can develop new skills, collaborate with others and bring their ideas to life.
“Our Makerspace area gives library members access to equipment that many people wouldn't normally have at home, and these Skills Check sessions will help them get started with confidence.
“Located on the ground floor of the new library, the Makerspace area includes beginner and heavy-duty sewing machines, overlockers, Cricut cutting machines, including an AutoPress fabric heat press, mug press and 3D printers.
“To use this equipment independently, members must first complete an Equipment Skills Check session.
“Bookings open today, with sessions running from Monday 31 August to Saturday 12 September.”

Cr Seymour said the new library would also feature two purpose-built digital studios for audio podcasting, each accommodating up to four people and equipped with professional microphones, with recordings able to be saved directly to a customer-supplied USB device.
“We know the community is excited to experience the new library, and we appreciate everyone's patience while we complete the move," he said.
“The former Hervey Bay Library is currently closed while staff relocate 74,000 items, install technology and prepare the new facility for opening.
“During the closure, reduced programs and limited public computer access, including Wi-Fi and printing are available at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery.
“Maryborough, Burrum Heads, Howard and Tiaro libraries remain open, and Hervey Bay customers who borrowed items before the closure have automatically received extended loan periods.”
The Hervey Bay Community Hub is being delivered under the Hinkler Regional Deal, with the Australian Government contributing $40 million towards the project.
