Fraser Coast Regional Council will develop a long-term plan for public toilets across the region to guide where facilities are located, how they are maintained and where future investment is prioritised.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor John Weiland said Council manages a large network of public toilet facilities across parks, beaches and public spaces, and it is important to plan for the future.

“Across the Fraser Coast, we look after nearly 150 public toilet facilities, and they play an important role in making our community spaces usable and accessible for everyone,” he said.

“But like many councils, we’re seeing increasing challenges with ageing infrastructure, ongoing maintenance, vandalism and rising costs.

“This strategy is about taking a step back and making sure we’re planning properly for the future—so we have the right facilities in the right places, built to the right standard.”

Cr Weiland said the new 10-year strategy would focus on improving safety, accessibility, overall quality and the user experience across the network.

“We know these facilities matter to the community, whether you’re at a playground, the beach or out enjoying a local park,” he said.

“This work will help us prioritise upgrades where they’re needed most and make sure we’re investing in locations that get the greatest use and benefit.”

Cr Weiland said the approach would also help Council manage long-term costs while continuing to provide a high level of service.

“By planning ahead, we can reduce reactive maintenance, better manage issues like vandalism, and make smarter decisions about where we invest in new or upgraded facilities,” he said.

“This is about making sure we can provide clean, safe and accessible public toilets for our community now and into the future.”

Work on the Public Amenities Strategy is expected to begin later this year, with a draft to be developed through 2026 and finalised alongside a 10-year capital works program by mid-2027.
