Shared responsibility key to enjoying beaches with dogs

New signs installed at key beach access points across Hervey Bay are reminding dog owners that off-leash areas are shared spaces where responsible ownership helps everyone enjoy the beach.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Animal Management spokesperson Cr John Weiland said the new signs made it easier for residents and visitors to understand the beach rules and reinforced good dog etiquette.
“The signs do more than show where dogs can and can’t go. They're a reminder that our off-leash beaches are shared spaces where everyone has a responsibility to be considerate of others,” he said.
“Most dog owners do the right thing, but a few simple habits make a big difference in helping everyone enjoy these beautiful spaces together.”
Cr Weiland said dog owners remained responsible for their dog's behaviour at all times.
“Off-leash doesn't mean out of control," he said.
“Your dog should remain within sight, respond when called and not cause a nuisance or behave aggressively towards people or other dogs.
“Carry a lead, pick up after your dog and, if your dog isn’t coping with the environment, pop them back on the lead and head somewhere quieter.
“The signs point people in the right direction, but it’s responsible dog owners who make our beaches welcoming places for everyone.”
The signage supports Stage 1 of Council’s simpler dog beach rules, introduced earlier this year.
Stage 2, including additional changes to dog access arrangements and seasonal shorebird protection measures, is expected to be introduced later this year or in early 2027 following updates to Council’s local laws.
