Fraser Coast Regional Council has welcomed the Queensland Government’s announcement of stronger police powers aimed at addressing antisocial behaviour in the Maryborough CBD.
Cr Paul Truscott said many local businesses and residents had raised concerns about repeat antisocial behaviour in parts of the city centre.
“Our local businesses work incredibly hard, and they deserve to operate in an environment where staff and customers feel safe,” Cr Truscott said.
“Maryborough is a proud community, and we want people to feel confident coming into the CBD to shop, work and spend time.
“If these new powers provide police with additional tools to respond quickly and effectively to serious or repeat offenders, that will be welcomed by many in our community.”
Cr Daniel Sanderson said the announcement was an important step toward improving safety in the Maryborough CBD.
“Policing and state legislation are matters for the Queensland Government, but Council will continue to work closely with police, other State agencies and local stakeholders to support a safe and welcoming CBD,” he said.
“Community safety is complex and requires a combination of enforcement, prevention and ongoing engagement, and we will continue working collaboratively to support positive outcomes for Maryborough.”
