Traffic safety improvements near Xavier Catholic College

Traffic safety and congestion management improvements are planned for the streets surrounding Xavier Catholic College following feedback from nearby residents.

The measures focus on improving safety and traffic flow during busy school drop-off and pick-up times, particularly along Endeavour Way and nearby streets in Eli Waters.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Lachlan Cosgrove said consultation confirmed how strongly residents feel about traffic and safety around the school.

“Residents told me very clearly that congestion during school pick-up times significantly affects their ability to move safely along the street and access their own driveways,” Cr Cosgrove said.

“The challenge is finding solutions that genuinely improve safety without simply pushing the problem into neighbouring streets.”

Cr Cosgrove said it was important to be clear about what the changes are designed to achieve and what Council can and cannot control.

“These measures focus on improving safety and traffic flow at peak school times, rather than regulating all-day parking in surrounding residential streets,” he said.

“Schools are responsible for providing adequate on-site parking for staff and students, and Council has raised longer-term parking options with the school as part of this process.”

Following the consultation, Council will introduce a series of practical, targeted measures it can implement directly, including:

  • a two-minute maximum time limit in the existing school ‘Kiss and Go’ zone
  • increased parking compliance patrols in the area as resources allow
  • installation of a 40km/h school zone along Endeavour Way

Cr Cosgrove said the measures target the areas where congestion and safety risks are most concentrated.

“Broad, regulated parking across multiple residential streets would simply push the problem elsewhere and unfairly impact residents who aren’t currently affected,” he said.

“Reducing how long vehicles linger in the ‘Kiss and Go’ area will help prevent queues from backing up and improve sightlines near key intersections.

“These changes target the real pinch points, improve visibility and traffic flow, and support safer conditions around the school without over-regulating the wider area.”

The works can be delivered within Council’s existing operational budget and will be rolled out as resources permit.

Council will continue to monitor conditions around the school and work with residents and the school to manage traffic and congestion pressures as the area continues to grow.
