Drivers, residents and local businesses along Walker Street will benefit from safer trips, better drainage and improved footpaths, with Fraser Coast Regional Council approving the next stage of major upgrades for one of Maryborough’s busiest roads.

Cr Paul Truscott said the $7.8 million upgrade would be delivered by local contractors JAC Civil Pty Ltd and make a real difference for the many people who rely on Walker Street every day.

“Walker Street is a gateway to Maryborough, with thousands of people relying on this road every day to get to work, shops, services and the Bruce Highway,” he said.

“Rebuilding this section of Walker Street will provide a smoother road surface, better drainage when it rains, and a safer, more comfortable footpath for people walking, riding or catching the bus.”

The works will occur on Walker Street between Yarralla Street and Pallas Street and will include:

  • Full reconstruction of the road
  • New kerb and guttering – the concrete edge and gutters that help carry rainwater away from the road
  • Replacement of the underground stormwater drainage system
  • A new footpath on the northern side of Walker Street
  • New street trees to provide shade and improve the look and feel of the street.

Cr Truscott said the project was the latest stage in a long-term program to upgrade Walker Street.

“Council started rebuilding Walker Street in 2017 and has been working along the road in stages as funding becomes available,” he said.

“Traffic counts show use of the road has grown strongly, with Walker Street carrying an average of 7,332 vehicles a day – an increase of about 30 per cent in the past five years.

“We have already rebuilt sections between Stevenson and Croydon streets, upgraded the Walker and Neptune Street intersection with new traffic lights, and reconstructed the section between Neptune Street and Yarralla Street.

“In 2023, we also worked with the Queensland Government on upgrades between Pallas Street and Ferry Street, which included new footpaths and the replacement of an old water main.

“This next stage means we are continuing to improve one of Maryborough’s most important roads, section by section, to support our growing community.”

The new project is proudly supported by the Crisafulli Government’s Works for Queensland program, which is contributing $3.8 million towards the works, with the remainder funded by Council.

Cr Truscott thanked the Crisafulli Government for its ongoing support through Works for Queensland.

“State Government funding through the Works for Queensland program is helping Council deliver this upgrade sooner than we could on our own,” he said.

“It is a strong example of different levels of government working together to improve everyday services for the community.”

Member for Maryborough John Barounis said through the Crisafulli Government’s Works for Queensland program, we are investing in infrastructure on the Fraser Coast to improve the liveability within our community.

“More than $3 million designated to the works for the Walker Street project will ensure safer, more accessible infrastructure for our community,” he said.

Construction timing and traffic changes will be confirmed closer to the start of works, with residents, businesses and road users to be notified before work begins in early 2026.
