H5 bird flu (H5N1)

Current Situation

Bird flu has been detected in a number of migratory birds throughout Australia, including a confirmed case on Moreton Island in Queensland.

The current risk to human health remains low.

Biosecurity Queensland is the lead agency for preparing for and responding to H5 bird flu (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza – H5N1) in Queensland. Council will support the Queensland Government’s response as required.

What should I do if I find sick or dead wildlife?

If you find sick or dead birds or wildlife:

  • Avoid touching the animal.
  • If it is safe to do so, record the location, number of animals and species (if known).
  • Report the sighting to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Do not attempt to collect or transport sick wildlife.
