A new library for the Fraser Coast

Opening in 2026 as part of the Hervey Bay Community Hub

The new Hervey Bay Library will be a welcoming, modern place designed around our community learning, creating and connecting.

From expanded, curated collections and children’s programs to digital studios, creative spaces, study areas and new technology, the library will offer more ways for people of all ages to use and enjoy this shared community space.

Highlights will include:

  • A larger, more accessible library layout
  • Dedicated children’s spaces and programs
  • Quiet study areas and bookable rooms
  • Creative and technology spaces
  • More computers and improved digital access
  • Makerspace

Modern services, with staff support still front and centre

Library services are evolving to make everyday tasks quicker and easier – while keeping friendly, knowledgeable staff available to help.

What this means for customers:

  • Faster, self-service printing and payments
  • Less waiting at service desks
  • More staff available on the floor to assist
  • Defined spaces designed for different needs

These improvements are already being introduced at the current library and will continue into the new building. Whether you prefer to self-serve or speak with staff, support will always be available.

A place for young minds to grow

Children and families will be a highlight of the new library, with more space and varied/targeted programs designed to support early learning, curiosity and creativity.

What families can look forward to:

  • Expanded children’s collections
  • New dedicated children’s programs and activities
  • New family programs and activities including STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, music and mathematics) based learning experiences
  • Welcoming spaces for parents and carers with a dedicated parents’ room.

The new library will be a place families can visit regularly – not only to borrow books, but to spend time together.

Preserving and sharing our local heritage

The new library will also be home to expanded local history and family research collections, helping preserve the stories of the Fraser Coast for future generations.

This includes:

  • New historical resources
  • Dedicated spaces for research and discovery
  • The Hervey Bay Family History Association relocating into the new library

These resources will make it easier for the community to explore, learn from and connect with our shared history.

More ways to create, learn and explore

The new library will support creativity and lifelong learning through a range of new expanded facilities, including:

  • An innovative Makerspace with hands-on technology
  • Digital studios for recording audio
  • Citizen science and learning areas
  • Study and remote working friendly spaces

These spaces are designed to be flexible and accessible – whether you’re learning something new or working on a passion project.
