Border Collies have taken the crown as the Fraser Coast’s most popular dog breed, knocking Staffordshire Terriers from the top spot.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said Council’s 2025/26 dog registration figures showed 1,724 Border Collies were registered across the region, ahead of 1,574 Staffordshire Terriers.

“Maltese came in third with Kelpies and Cattle Dogs rounding out the top five, while Dachshunds made their way into the top 10 this year, replacing Chihuahuas,” he said.

“It’s always interesting to see which breeds are most popular across the Fraser Coast, but whether you own a Border Collie, a Staffy or a sausage dog, making sure they’re registered and their details are up to date is an important part of responsible pet ownership.

“A total of 25,987 dogs were registered across the Fraser Coast during the 2025/26 registration period, including 21,890 desexed dogs.”

Cr Seymour said registration fees help Council provide animal management services for pets and their owners across the region.

“Registration supports services such as our animal management facility and adoption centre, fenced off-leash areas, education programs and other responsible pet ownership initiatives,” he said.

“This year, Council has also introduced free registration for dogs aged under 12 months, recognising that owners of some breeds may be advised to wait until their dog is older before desexing.

“First-time registration is also free, while annual renewal for a desexed and microchipped dog is $44.”

Dog registration renewal notices for the 2026/27 period are now going out, with residents having until 30 October to pay their renewal.

Residents who have not registered their dog, whose pet’s details have changed or whose pet has passed away can contact Council on 1300 79 49 29 to speak with a Customer Service Officer.
