A safer, more connected and accessible Hervey Bay city centre is on the way, with new road and footpath upgrades starting next week around the site of the future Hervey Bay Community Hub. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the improvements were designed to make it easier, safer and more enjoyable to move around the city centre, whether walking, cycling, driving or visiting local shops and services. “The Hervey Bay Community Hub is more than just a building – it’s about bringing people together and helping our city centre thrive,” he said. “These upgrades are the next step in the transformation of our city centre. They’ll improve the streets and footpaths around the hub to make the entire precinct more accessible and welcoming.” The $3.6 million project will include:
Council Roads and Transport spokesperson Phil Truscott said the improvements would benefit the whole community. “Whether you’re heading to the new library, dropping into a local café or just passing through, these works will make getting around safer and easier,” he said. “They’re designed to support the future of the Hervey Bay City Centre – a place that works well for pedestrians, drivers and businesses alike.” Staged works will begin next week (Monday February 9), starting with the installation of raised pedestrian crossings on Main Street and Torquay Road. The majority of construction will be carried out as night works (5.30pm – 5am, Sunday to Thursday) to reduce disruption to traffic and local businesses. Two-way traffic flow will be maintained during the day wherever practicable, with Council and the contractor to work closely with local businesses and residents to minimise impacts through construction. The road and footpath upgrades are expected to be completed by June 2026, weather permitting. The Hervey Bay Community Hub is due to open in the second half of 2026 and will include:
