Final preparations are underway for the opening of the new Hervey Bay Library, with the current library building on Old Maryborough Road set to close from 4pm on Saturday 1 August as collections and equipment are relocated to the Hervey Bay Community Hub.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the closure would allow library collections, equipment and resources to be safely moved and the new facility to be prepared ahead of opening on Monday 31 August at 23 Main Street.

“The closure of the current library building marks an important milestone in the transition to the Community Hub and the opening of a new chapter for library services in Hervey Bay," he said.

“Behind the scenes, library staff and contractors will be relocating more than 74,000 items, installing equipment and preparing the new spaces so they are ready to welcome the community.

“We know many residents are excited to visit the new library, and we appreciate the community's patience while this important work takes place.”

Cr Seymour said a range of arrangements had been put in place to minimise disruption while Hervey Bay library services transition to their new home.

“Other Fraser Coast libraries at Maryborough, Burrum Heads, Howard and Tiaro will remain open during the transition period, and Hervey Bay customers borrowing items before the closure will automatically receive extended loan periods," he said.

“Limited public computer access, including printing, scanning and Wi-Fi, will be available at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery.

“Some Hervey Bay Library programs will also continue in a reduced capacity at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery during the transition.”

Cr Seymour encouraged residents to familiarise themselves with the transition arrangements ahead of the closure.

“External return chutes at the current Hervey Bay Library will be removed from 27 July as preparations for the move continue," he said.

“From 27 July until the library closes at 4pm on Saturday 1 August, items can still be returned at the library service counter during normal opening hours.

“We encourage residents to visit Council's Community Hub webpage for the latest information, including key dates, temporary arrangements and frequently asked questions.”
