Fraser Coast residents are invited to register for three new sessions aimed at raising awareness of domestic and family violence, promoting self-care and wellbeing, and providing practical tools for managing challenging conversations.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the sessions form part of the Community Recovery Program, which helps strengthen community resilience and support recovery following disasters.

“Building a resilient community is about more than preparing for natural disasters. It's about ensuring people have the knowledge, confidence and support networks to look after themselves and those around them," Cr Seymour said.

“The first session, Accidental Counselling Skills, is designed to help participants support people experiencing stress, grief, trauma or personal crises.

“Many of us find ourselves supporting someone through a difficult time, and having the skills to listen, respond appropriately and connect them with support can make a real difference.

“Participants will learn active listening techniques, managing difficult conversations, setting healthy boundaries and recognising when someone may need professional support.”

Accidental Counselling Skills:

  • 28 September, 9:00am to 3:00pm, Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre
  • 26 November, 9am to 3:00pm, Boonooroo Community Hall

Cr Seymour said the Know the Signs information sessions will help people with disability, carers, support workers and community members recognise the early signs of domestic and family violence and understand how to respond safely.

“These face-to-face information sessions will provide valuable information to help protect some of the community's most vulnerable residents,” he said.

Know the Signs information sessions:

  • 29 September – 9:30am to 11:30am – Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre
  • 29 September – 2pm to 4pm – Maryborough Services Club

Cr Seymour said the Self Care workshop will help participants identify their self-care needs and explore practical tools to support positive mental health and wellbeing.

"Everyone can benefit from practising good self-care, and this workshop offers practical techniques to help people build resilience and maintain their wellbeing," Cr Seymour said.

The Self Care workshop is being held at Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre on 30 September from 9am to 3pm.

Cr Seymour said the workshops would be facilitated by Karen Prestidge, who has more than 25 years’ experience in crisis intervention and community recovery.
