Fraser Coast residents are being encouraged to use Get Ready Month this October to prepare their households and homes for the upcoming storm and bushfire season.

Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair George Seymour said preparing for severe weather did not need to be complicated.

“Getting ready can start with a few simple jobs around the home, whether it’s cleaning out the gutters, tidying up the yard, checking your emergency kit or sitting down with your household to make a plan,” he said.

“The important thing is to do these things before severe weather is on the way, rather than waiting until the last minute.

“Think about the risks where you live, what your household might need if you lose power or become isolated, where you would go if you needed to leave and how you would stay informed.

“A little preparation now can make a big difference when severe weather arrives.”

Get Ready Queensland encourages residents to take three key steps: know your risk, make a plan and pack a kit.

Cr Seymour said residents should also know where to find reliable local information before an emergency occurred.

“Council’s Disaster Dashboard brings together important local information during severe weather, including warnings, road closures and flood cameras,” he said.

“You can also opt in to receive emergency notifications, so I encourage residents to familiarise themselves with the Dashboard now before severe weather strikes.”

As part of Get Ready Month, residents can meet emergency services personnel and learn more about preparing for severe weather at two free Get Ready Food n Groove events:

  • Friday 9 October, 4pm to 9pm – Seafront Oval, Hervey Bay
  • Friday 30 October, 4pm to 9pm – Brolga Theatre Riverstage, Maryborough

The events will feature emergency service displays and demonstrations alongside live music, street food and market stalls.
