Fraser Coast residents are being invited to register for the Grow It Local online program, as Council launches the campaign today with three hands-on gardening events in Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said it was great to welcome gardening experts Paul West and Darryl Nicols to the region to run workshops with the community and school students, sharing tips on growing your own food, sustainability and reducing waste.

“The Grow It Local team delivered sold-out workshops in Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Fraser Coast Anglican College, with strong interest from residents keen to learn more about food sustainability,” he said.

“Residents are encouraged to sign up to the national online program, designed to help people grow their own food with confidence, reduce waste and connect with like-minded gardeners.

“Members also get access to expert advice from well-known gardening personalities, including Gardening Australia host Costa Georgiadis, along with practical tips to help them get started.”

Cr Seymour said the program made it easy for anyone to start growing, regardless of experience.

“Whether you have a backyard, balcony or just a sunny windowsill, Grow It Local makes gardening simple and fun for everyone,” he said.

“Members also receive free seeds delivered twice a year, with the next release in September timed perfectly for spring planting.

“Across Australia, the program has attracted nearly 57,000 members and is helping divert more than 66,000 kilograms of food waste from landfill each week.

“Here on the Fraser Coast, more than 400 residents have already signed up, and we’d love to see even more locals get involved.”

Residents who sign up to the Grow It Local program can access:

  • Free online resources, including step-by-step guides and expert advice
  • Monthly online workshops with gardening experts
  • Free heirloom seeds delivered twice a year (limited quantities)
  • Opportunities to connect with a community of local growers

Cr Seymour said programs like this really help residents learn new skills, connect with others and take simple steps to reduce waste at home.

“Council is proud to support the Grow It Local campaign as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and waste reduction,” he said.
