Hervey Bay Airport terminal upgrade underway

Work begins today on an $18 million upgrade to the Hervey Bay Airport terminal, improving the travel experience for passengers and preparing the facility for future growth.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the upgrade would benefit both residents and visitors and was a major investment in the region’s transport infrastructure.

“This project is about making sure the Hervey Bay Airport can comfortably support increasing passenger numbers now and into the future,” he said.

“This upgrade will improve access to the terminal, create more welcoming spaces, and ensure the airport continues to support local business, tourism and population growth.

“By investing in our airport, we are investing in the region’s economy and making travel easier, safer and more enjoyable for everyone.”

Deputy Mayor Lachlan Cosgrove said the project would make the airport more accessible and functional.

“Phase one focuses on upgrades at the front of the terminal and surrounding public areas, including improved pedestrian access, refreshed landscaping, and new public amenities with a Changing Places facility for people with disability and their carers,” he said.

“Phase two will deliver a bigger, more comfortable departure lounge, upgraded security screening and improved facilities for arriving passengers.

“Together, both phases will provide a modern, efficient terminal ready for growth and future events like the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.”

The first phase, which gets underway today, focuses on landside improvements including:

  • Renewal of the external terminal facade
  • Improved pedestrian access
  • Drainage improvements
  • Construction and fit-out of new car rental booths
  • New public amenities, including a Changing Places facility

The second phase will focus on terminal and airside improvements, including:

  • Expansion of and enhancements to the departure lounge
  •  Increased seating capacity from just under 200 to almost 500 seats
  • Upgraded security screening and arrival facilities
  • New airside arrival and departure ramps

Construction of the first phase is expected to be completed by December 2026, with the second phase starting in early 2027 and finishing by the end of 2028, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The airport will remain open throughout construction with works to be staged around flight schedules and, where possible, undertaken at night or on weekends to minimise disruption.
