Hervey Bay serves up national tennis tournament

Some of Australia’s best senior tennis players will descend on Hervey Bay from tomorrow for three days of high-level competition, bringing visitors to the region, supporting local businesses and reinforcing the Fraser Coast’s growing reputation as a destination for major sporting events.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said around 100 players had registered for this year’s Hervey Bay Masters Tournament, with competitors travelling from New South Wales, South Australia and across Queensland.

“The Hervey Bay Masters continues to attract quality players from around Australia, highlighting the Fraser Coast’s growing ability to host high-level sporting events,” Cr Seymour said.

“This year’s tournament features around half a dozen Australian representatives competing across 48 events, making it one of the strongest fields in recent years.

“One of the standout competitors this year is Kerryn Cyprien from the Gold Coast, who recently won the Most Outstanding 30+ Tennis Masters Award and is ranked world number eight in ITF singles for her age group, as well as Australia’s number one player in women’s 55+ singles and doubles.

“Events like this not only showcase top-level sport but also provide economic benefits for the region through visitor spending on accommodation, hospitality and local businesses.”

Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association President Geoff Arnell said it was fantastic for the club to host national ranking events and showcase the region to visiting players.

“We greatly appreciate Council’s support and are looking forward to another outstanding tournament that highlights both Hervey Bay and the strength of tennis in our region,” Mr Arnell said.

“It’s been a tough six months for the club after sustaining around $130,000 in damage from a mini tornado last November, so this tournament is an important opportunity as we continue to recover and rebuild.

“We’re also excited to welcome more players back later this year, with five days of tennis in September featuring two tournaments back-to-back.”

Cr Seymour said the Wendy Turnbull Cup will be held in Hervey Bay from September 22–25, followed by Hervey Bay Open from September 25–27.

“The 2026 Hervey Bay Masters Tournament will be held from June 12–14 at the Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association courts on Colyton Street, Hervey Bay.

“Spectators are welcome, with play beginning at 1pm on Friday, June 12, and continuing from 8am on Saturday and Sunday.
