Maryborough’s most popular walking loop is set to shine, with work beginning on a $2.7 million lighting project around Anzac Park and the Maryborough Golf Course.

Cr Paul Truscott said the project would deliver new pathway lighting along sections of Neptune Street and Queen Street, improving safety and visibility for the thousands of residents who use the path each week.

“This pathway is part of daily life for so many people in Maryborough,” he said.

“As the days get shorter, good lighting means people can keep walking safely — whether that’s an early morning walk, a catch-up with friends or an evening exercise routine. It’s about making sure this space can be used confidently all year round.”

Stage 1 works will be undertaken on the eastern side of Neptune Street between Alice Street and Queen Street, and on the northern side of Queen Street for approximately 180 metres.

The works include installation of electrical conduits and footings in preparation for new light poles, construction of new kerb and channelling, and associated road and footpath improvements.

Cr Daniel Sanderson said better lighting would increase visibility and help people feel safer using the pathway.

“This walking loop is effectively Maryborough’s version of the Hervey Bay Esplanade — it’s one of our key community spaces,” he said.

“Encouraging more people to use the pathway across more hours of the day naturally improves safety and community presence. Well-lit paths support shift workers, families and anyone who may not be able to exercise during daylight hours.”

Cr Truscott said the upgrade had been several years in the making.

“We first raised the concept a number of years ago, so I’m grateful Council has backed the project and that we’ve secured State Government funding to help deliver it,” he said.

Cr Sanderson said he was proud to see the long-planned project progressing.

“It’s fantastic to see this significant investment now underway at one of Maryborough’s premier parks and walking destinations,” he said.

“I’m proud to have worked alongside Councillor Truscott to advocate for this upgrade and help bring it to fruition.”

The Stage 1 works have been awarded to Grand Civil, with construction expected to continue until late May, weather permitting.

The $2.7 million project is proudly funded through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program.

Design work for Stage 2, which will complete the pathway lighting project, is currently being finalised for tender.
