Maryborough SES volunteers are set to get a more suitable operational base, with Fraser Coast Regional Council today endorsing plans to relocate the unit to the Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said having the right facilities was critical to ensuring SES volunteers could respond effectively during emergencies.

“Our SES volunteers give their time to help others, often heading out in difficult conditions when our community needs them most,” he said.

“Having the right base means they can train, look after their vehicles and equipment, and be ready to respond quickly when severe weather or disasters strike.

“The existing Maryborough SES facility has served the community for many years, but the unit has outgrown it and the building is no longer suitable for its needs.”

The proposed facility would make use of existing Council buildings and infrastructure at the Showgrounds where practical, including converting the former caretaker’s residence for SES use, alongside new vehicle storage and other facilities, parking and hardstand areas.

Cr Seymour said using existing infrastructure would help provide a practical and cost-effective solution.

“This approach allows us to make good use of what is already available at the Showgrounds while providing the additional facilities the SES needs,” he said.

The project is being funded through Council’s Disaster Management and Resilience Levy reserve.

Council will also continue to explore external grants and future funding opportunities for the Maryborough SES.

The project had originally been planned for 2029/30, but Council has agreed to look at bringing it forward to 2026/27 so Maryborough SES volunteers can get a more suitable base sooner.

Planning and design work will now get underway, with a construction timeframe to be confirmed as the project progresses.
