Fraser Coast residents living with dementia, along with their families and carers, are being encouraged to attend a free mini expo in Maryborough this month offering practical information, support and connection.

The These Hands Mini Dementia Expo will be held in the foyer of the Brolga Theatre from 9am to noon on Monday 13 July and will feature exhibitors, guest speakers, morning tea and a performance by the Dementia Friendly Singing Groups.

The expo will also provide visitors with an opportunity to view the These Hands photographic exhibition by local photographer Rowena Allen, currently on display in the Brolga Theatre foyer.

The powerful black-and-white exhibition features portraits of the hands of people living with dementia, accompanied by storyboards celebrating each person's life, achievements, and experiences.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the exhibition and expo aimed to raise awareness about dementia while reminding the community that people are far more than their diagnosis.

“Dementia touches the lives of many people across the Fraser Coast, whether directly or through a family member or friend,” he said.

“The These Hands exhibition is a moving reminder that people living with dementia continue to have rich histories, valuable experiences and meaningful contributions to make within our community.

“The accompanying mini expo will provide an opportunity for people living with dementia, their families and carers to connect with local support services, access practical information and learn more about the resources available to them.”

Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Officer Juls de Waard said the event would help people better understand dementia and reduce the sense of isolation that can often accompany a diagnosis.

“Receiving a dementia diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but it's important for people to know they do not have to walk that journey alone,” she said.

“This expo brings together a range of organisations and services in one place, making it easier for people to find information, ask questions and build connections with others who may be experiencing similar challenges.

“We hope the These Hands exhibition also encourages conversations about dementia and helps people look beyond the illness to see the person, their story and the life they continue to lead.”

The These Hands Mini Dementia Expo is being organised by the Fraser Coast Dementia Alliance, with support from Fraser Coast Regional Council. Torbay Lifestyles and Care and Wellways are providing morning tea for attendees.
