New $1 million hangar takes off at Hervey Bay Airport

A new $1 million storage hangar at Hervey Bay Airport is taking off, signalling major investment in the region’s growth and enhancing services for Lady Elliot Island flights.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the new hangar is now fully operational and replaces two older facilities currently used by Seair Pacific to service flights to and from Lady Elliot Island.
“Lady Elliot Island is located 130 kilometres north-east of Hervey Bay and offers unique reef experiences while educating guests about protecting the environment,” Cr Seymour said.
“This new hangar will help protect the Seair fleet from the elements, ensuring aircraft remain operational to service the three daily flights between Hervey Bay and Lady Elliot Island.
“The hangar is large enough to house three passenger planes, providing protection from wind, rain, sun and hail.”
Cr Seymour said this investment by Seair is a strong show of confidence in the Hervey Bay Airport and the Fraser Coast region.
“Passengers not only travel through Hervey Bay to reach Lady Elliot Island - many also stay to visit K’gari, Lady Musgrave and explore the Fraser Coast’s natural attractions, supporting our local tourism economy,” he said.
Lady Elliot Island custodian Peter Gash said the hangar has been two years in the planning and he is thrilled to see it finally operational.
“I’d like to thank Council and the Hervey Bay Airport for being so supportive of this project and making the build as easy as possible,” Mr Gash said.
“We’ve made this investment because this region continues to thrive and demand for Lady Elliot flights continues to grow.
“We recently celebrated 20 years as custodians of the island, transforming it into a pristine destination that now employs 130 people.
“We look forward to continuing our partnership with Council and the airport to grow and promote the region.”
Council will continue to work with industry to enhance facilities at Hervey Bay Airport and support opportunities that help drive investment, jobs and visitor growth across the Fraser Coast.
