Record low unemployment for Fraser Coast

• Fraser Coast unemployment falls to a record low of 4.5 per cent
• Latest figures show continued improvement in local employment
• Council focused on growing the economy and creating more local jobs

The Fraser Coast's unemployment rate has fallen to a record low of 4.5 per cent as the region continues to build economic momentum.

The March 2026 quarter unemployment rate is down from 5.4 per cent in the previous quarter and is the lowest recorded for the Fraser Coast since comparable local government area data became available.

The figures are published quarterly by the Australian Government's Small Area Labour Markets program using Australian Bureau of Statistics labour force data.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour welcomed the result, saying it reflected growing confidence in the region while reinforcing the importance of continuing to create opportunities for local people.

“This is a fantastic result for the Fraser Coast and an encouraging sign that our local economy is heading in the right direction," he said.

“A record low unemployment rate means more people are finding work, more families are benefiting from secure incomes, and more businesses are able to grow.

“We’re working to ensure we have a vibrant and healthy economy that supports local jobs. We know there is still more work to do, but this result shows the Fraser Coast is building real momentum."

Cr Seymour said Council remained focused on creating the conditions for long-term economic growth through its Fraser Coast Futures 2036 – For a Better Future, Built Together Economic Development Strategy.

"That strategy sets an ambitious goal of growing our economy by $2 billion by 2036, attracting new investment and creating more opportunities for young professionals, skilled tradespeople and families to build their future here on the Fraser Coast," he said.

Cr Seymour said Council was also continuing to deliver practical employment initiatives, including the Jobs Ready Program, which recently secured more than $700,000 in Australian Government funding to continue operating until June 2027.

“The Jobs Ready Program helps local people build confidence, develop workplace skills and connect with employers, while also supporting businesses to recruit, retain and develop staff.

“I've met many participants who have transformed their lives through meaningful employment. Having a job is about much more than a pay cheque. It builds confidence, creates purpose and strengthens our community.”

The Fraser Coast Jobs Ready Program has supported more than 600 participants over the past four years and will continue delivering employment and business support initiatives across the region through to June 2027.
