Safer footpath and road upgrades planned for Howard

Road and footpath upgrades will get underway on William Street in Howard this month, improving safety for school students and making the street easier and safer to use for pedestrians.
The works will occur on the eastern side of William Street, extending the existing footpath to Annie Street and upgrading the road edge and drainage near Howard State School.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Michelle Byrne said the project focused on safety and accessibility in a busy school area.
“This project is about improving safety for students, families and pedestrians, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times,” Cr Byrne said.
“Extending the footpath and upgrading the road edge and drainage will create a safer, more functional street for everyone who uses this area each day.”
Works are scheduled to start from 10 February and run through to early May 2026, weather permitting, and will be delivered by Council’s own workforce.
The $240,000 project is partly funded through the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Program and includes road widening, new kerbing and drainage (kerb and channel), a 1.5-metre-wide concrete footpath and pavement upgrades.
Cr Byrne said Council would work closely with the school and nearby residents to minimise disruption during construction.
“We know William Street is well used, so traffic management will be staged and clearly signed, and the school and adjoining residents will be kept informed as the works progress,” she said.
Temporary traffic changes will be in place at different stages of construction, including shoulder closures and short-term detours when required.
Residents are encouraged to follow traffic signage and allow extra time when travelling through the area during construction.
