Scarness Rotunda precinct to be named Haddow’s Corner

The parkland surrounding the Scarness Band Rotunda will be named “Haddow’s Corner” after Fraser Coast Regional Council today endorsed the community-supported proposal.
The naming recognises the Haddow family’s significant contribution to Scarness and Hervey Bay, dating back to 1925.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the decision reflected strong community backing and local pride in the area’s history.
“The Haddow family helped shape Scarness into a vibrant place for locals and visitors, from early businesses through to community spaces and entertainment,” he said.
“This is about recognising that history and contribution in a meaningful way, particularly as we approach the Rotunda’s centenary next month.”
More than 150 people took part in a poll on Council’s Have Your Say website, with strong support for recognising the Haddow family and Haddow’s Corner receiving the highest level of support.
The Scarness Band Rotunda is a well-known landmark and focal point of the foreshore, recently restored to help preserve its character for future generations.
Cr Seymour said the naming ensures the story of the Haddow family remains part of the community for years to come.
“Haddow’s Corner will be a lasting reminder of the people who helped build this part of the Fraser Coast and the role Scarness has played as a meeting place for generations,” he said.
The naming will be formally recognised in May 2026 as part of the Rotunda’s 100-year anniversary, with signage and on-site recognition to be installed.
