Statement on Maryborough CBD concerns
Published on 11 February 2026
Fraser Coast Regional Council understands and shares community concerns about safety in the Maryborough CBD.
Council is an active member of the Maryborough Operational Working Group, which includes State Government agencies such as Housing, Queensland Police, Health and Corrections.
The group works closely with local businesses and community organisations to support coordinated responses where issues arise.
Council has increased its presence and services in and around the CBD, with staff monitoring conditions on the ground and reporting issues directly to Queensland Police.
It’s important to be clear about roles and responsibilities. Regardless of whether a role is described as a Council officer, community patrol or private security, only Queensland Police have the legal authority to deal with criminal behaviour or move people on.
Many of the behaviours being raised are linked to complex issues such as homelessness, mental health and substance dependency. These are not issues Council can resolve alone.
Council has consistently advocated for increased State support in housing, mental health and addiction services, which are critical to address the underlying causes rather than just the visible symptoms.
Council remains committed to working with all levels of government and the community to support a safe, welcoming city.
