The Burrum River Bridge will temporarily close for about four weeks for essential maintenance.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Michelle Byrne said the works would take place from 20 April to 15 May to keep the bridge safe and operational.

“The Burrum River Bridge is an important link for local residents, particularly those living in Howard, Torbanlea and Burrum,” she said.

“It is an older structure, and like all bridges, it needs regular maintenance to stay in good working condition.”

To allow crews to work safely, the bridge will be closed during work hours, with traffic detoured via the Bruce Highway.

Cr Byrne said access had been maintained outside of work hours to reduce disruption for residents.

“The bridge will be open overnight on weekdays from 5.30pm to 6.30am, and remain open all day on weekends for both vehicles and pedestrians,” she said.

“By staging the works this way, we’re able to get the job done while still keeping the bridge accessible when people need it most.”

The works will include further crack repairs to bridge piers and components, as well as kerb, bridge rail and abutment repairs, building on maintenance completed in 2025.

Variable Message Sign (VMS) boards are already in place to provide advance notice to motorists and help the community plan their travel.

Nearby businesses will remain open during the works, and the community is encouraged to continue supporting local.

RoadTek, a commercial business within the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, will deliver the works for Council.

The Burrum River Bridge, which is about 100 years old, was transferred to Council from the State Government when the new Bruce Highway was built in the mid to late 1980s.
