Fraser Coast Regional Council has today released the full community engagement report outlining the views of the 4,385 people who participated in consultation about the future use of the Torquay Caravan Park site.

Mayor George Seymour said the report provides an in-depth picture of what the community values along the Torquay foreshore and how residents and visitors see the site evolving in the future.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed to this important conversation,” Cr Seymour said.

“This report gives Councillors a clear understanding of community sentiment, the reasons behind people’s preferences, and the range of ideas and concerns expressed throughout the process.”

The engagement, which ran from 13 October to 10 November, asked the community to consider three options for the site:

  • Upgrading the existing caravan park
  • Converting the land to open space parkland
  • Developing a premium playground and recreation hub

Key findings of the report include:

  • 76 per cent of respondents identified the refurbishment of the existing caravan park as the option that would provide the greatest community benefit.
  • 9 per cent preferred the open space parkland option, and
  • 15 per cent supported the premium playground and recreation concept.

Feedback also reflected different perspectives across age groups, how people use the foreshore, and the values they associate with the coastline.

The report summarises survey results, submissions, feedback from community pop-up sessions and demographic insights to provide an evidence base for Council’s upcoming decision.

The survey generated more than 20,000 comments, reflecting the strong level of community interest in the future of the site.

Cr Seymour said the release of the report ensures transparency and allows the community to see the full range of views shared.

“Council will consider the report in detail ahead of making a decision on the long-term future of the site at our December meeting,” he said.
