Traffic lights coming to busy Hervey Bay intersection

A $3.6 million upgrade to one of Hervey Bay’s busiest intersections starts this month, with traffic lights to be installed at the corner of Tooth Street and Old Maryborough Road to improve safety and traffic flow for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor Lachlan Cosgrove said the intersection was a key route connecting Point Vernon, Pialba and the wider Hervey Bay area.
“This intersection is used by thousands of vehicles every day, including residents travelling between Point Vernon and central Hervey Bay, people heading to local businesses and students and families travelling to and from nearby schools,” he said.
“As Hervey Bay continues to grow, upgrades like this are important to keep people moving safely and efficiently around the city.”
Cr Cosgrove said the upgrade would include installing traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, road widening, new footpaths, bike lane improvements, drainage works and lighting upgrades.
“With so many people travelling through this intersection each day, this upgrade will help improve safety and keep traffic moving more smoothly, particularly during busy peak periods and school drop-off and pick-up times,” he said.
“Motorists should expect some temporary traffic disruptions while works are underway, and we thank the community in advance for their patience while these important upgrades are delivered.”
Cr Cosgrove said Council and the local contractor SGQ would work closely with nearby residents, businesses and road users throughout the project.
“Temporary traffic changes will be needed during construction, and motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and follow all signage and directions while works are underway,” he said.
Works will start on 8 June and are expected to be completed by the end of November, weather permitting.
The $3.6 million upgrade is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program through the ‘Road Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Construction Works’ project.
