Works to protect Hervey Bay coastline

Maintenance works to protect key sections of Hervey Bay’s coastline will get underway in May, helping safeguard the foreshore, roads and nearby properties from erosion.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said the Margaret and Churchill Street groynes and the Elizabeth Street seawall would be upgraded to help maintain important coastal defences.

“Coastal assets like these play a vital role in protecting our community from erosion,” he said.

“This work will ensure these structures continue to do their job and support the long-term resilience of our coastline.”

Cr O’Keefe said the project would involve replacing armour rock at the Margaret and Churchill Street groynes, as well as maintenance and reconstruction works along the Elizabeth Street seawall.

“These are essential maintenance works that will strengthen the structures and extend their lifespan,” he said.

“By carrying out this work now, we’re helping to avoid more significant issues in the future and safeguarding important community infrastructure.”

Temporary impacts are expected during construction, including changes to pedestrian access and increased truck movements in the area.

From early May to August, haulage routes will include sections of Elizabeth Street, the Esplanade (between Elizabeth and Margaret streets), Alexander Street and Cypress Street.

Cr O’Keefe said the contractors would work to minimise disruption where possible.

“We know these works may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate the community’s patience while this important maintenance is carried out,” he said.

“A pedestrian management plan will be in place, and we encourage everyone to follow signage and take care around work zones.” The works have been awarded to local contractor JAC Civil for $2 million, with site establishment from 5 May and construction starting on 11 May. The project is expected to be completed by the end of August, weather permitting.
